Re-worked Friday: Rebecca

So, here it finally is, my last and final post of Re-worked Fridays. I hope everyone has enjoyed the journey into my early photos as much as I have. They're definitely eye openers and make me extremely thankful for the artistic growth I've experienced and the knowledge I've gained.

For this last post, I chose a photo from one of the shoots I've enjoyed most. Rebecca is such a deep, beautiful, wonderful, enlightened soul and I always enjoy the shoots we have together. We always have the best conversations and it's never just polite chit chat. I love the way she opens up to people and lets them in to her lovely little world. Keep your eyes and ears open, because I should have another shoot coming your way of Rebecca. We have a beach shoot in the works, and it's going to be PHENOMENAL. My hopes are high. :)

The First Edit:

And the re-edit:

This image is far too dramatic for color, especially subdued tones. Enjoy!

Community Events: Bark in the Park

I was lucky enough to be able to photograph for Greenhill their wonderful event, Bark in the Park. For those of you who don't know, Bark in the Park is a Eugene, Oregon 5k (or 2k) run that Greenhill Humane Society holds every year as a fundraiser for their AMAZING humane society. I can't even begin to express how much I love Greenhill and what they're doing every day for animals everywhere. Their euthanization policy is top notch and I applaud their efforts towards controlling the feral cat population.

The Bark in the Park race can be done with or without your dog (there are seperate races for each) and it was LOADS of fun watching all the silly dogs and their equally silly owners stampede across that starting line. Up until this point I had no idea how animal (especially dog) crazy I am. At least now I'm fully aware. I'm pretty sure my heart smiled from ventricle to ventricle the minute I arrived and saw the hundreds of dogs I was about to enjoy meeting and petting. I had no idea that I'd have such an awesome time and I can't wait to go next year! Even if you don't have a dog, you should come out. I don't and I had the best time ever. :)

(I want to apologize in advance for any amount of excessive pug photos ... I'm completely infatuated with the breed)

Re-Worked Friday: Aubrey and Kevin

I said I wouldn't do a portrait or senior photo today for the third and second to last installment of Re-worked Fridays, and I kept my word. This week's photograph comes from the first wedding I ever photographed.

My dear friend Aubrey was getting married to one of the nicest guys I've had the pleasure of meeting. It was a simple, perfect, relaxing wedding, a bride couldn't have asked for anything else. I had such a fun time (It helps when every guest is super cool and SO much fun to talk to) and loved capturing Aubrey grinning from ear to ear the entire day. Her and Kevin are so sweet together, and I love their little family. Emily is cute as a button (in case you haven't noticed from previous posts) and it's no wonder with parents THAT amazing.

Here is my original image:

SO embarrassing ...

But here is my re-edit:

MUCH better. I love this image, and these people.

Helpful Tips Before Your Photo Shoot

I can't tell you how many times I've heard "I don't know what to wear!" or "How should I do my hair?" before a shoot. I think every girl's brain turns off due to overload when faced with the challenge of getting ready for a photo shoot. So, I decided to post some tips to help everyone out and give some of you some piece of mind when you get ready for your big day in front of the camera. Plus, it's Monday, and I think we all want to check out some great clothes to make this day a bit brighter!

So, let's start off with your clothing choice. It's no secret that I am a big fan of dresses or skirts. They're my personal preference, plus, there's nothing more elegant and graceful than a woman's legs. But you can spruce up any shorts or jeans with a really great top or cardigan. It's important to try to stay away from lots of solids. Prints (Especially stripes or polka dots) are gorgeous and help to liven any outfit. Not to mention, they're unbelievable in black and white. Solids tend to look drab and uninteresting in black and white photos. Especially when paired with jeans. Here are some great different pieces currently available at Forever 21. As I love Forever 21, and they always have awesome prices, all the different clothes, accessories and shoes featured will be from there today.

If you have a really great solid colored outfit that you feel the most confident in, a great way to spruce it up is through great accessories and patterned headbands. Headbands can draw a lot of attention to your face and how unbelievable your eyes are. Just be careful with hats, since they can potentially cover most of your face and hide the best part of the photo ... YOU.

Oooohhh yes, my favorite part. SHOES. My personal favorite shoes right now (And almost all the time) are wedges. When you're short, like me, wedges can add some awesome height and not only make your whole body thinner, but especially your legs. Plus, they're very easy to walk in if you're clumsy like me. Just make sure to pick a shoe that's you. Shoes are a lot of fun and are the cherry on top of a great outfit. Don't be afraid to use your shoes as that color pop in your photo. Pale pinks and beiges are gorgeous outfit choices. Especially when paired with an aqua or emerald green shoe to liven the photo up.

Even once you're dressed and looking like a million bucks, there are a few helpful tips to know.

Number one, EVERYONE is nervous when we first start shooting. I can't stress that enough. Almost every single client I've had has warned me that they're nervous, and there's really no need to be! I show up excited to capture how absolutely breathtaking you are in every way, and I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't already think you were. Everyone is beautiful and mysterious and captivating in their own ways. So just let your colors fly, and let me do all the work.

Second, bright sunshine isn't your best friend. I'm not being polite or trying to relieve your nerves about the weather when I express that I'm so glad it's cloudy. Clouds cast fabulous light that illuminates your face and gives you a natural glow. Plus, there's none of that nasty squinting or prolonged eyeball torture to the sun. Clouds are great, I love them, they're your friend, so don't stress it!

And last but not least, posing. I'll help you quite a bit with this, but it always helps to practice in front of your mirror. Just move your body and notice what angles you can tilt that make you look best. Study magazines, like Teen Vogue. It'll be beneficial and make you feel less awkward when you're in front of the lens. I like to let people get comfortable and feel their body out, and then fine tune their poses. It helps to make you feel more comfortable and natural, and those sentiments convey to the photographs.

I hope all my tips have been helpful. I'm an open book, so any questions you have before, during, or even after your shoot are more than welcome. So don't hesitate! I like to think of my clients as my friends, so be my friend. :)

Re-worked Friday: Katie

It's time for round 2 of Re-worked Friday. For this week, I have a photo from another senior photo session (I'm going to have to mix in a wedding shot next week or something!). Katie is a DOLL. She is hilarious and so strongly her own person. I love it. She has such an intense light about her. I'm pretty sure wherever Katie goes, she puts smiles on everyone's faces. Here is a re-worked photo of Katie and her mom. Two beautiful ladies with beautiful hearts. :)

And here is the original:

I like the new one LOADS more, they're too beautiful for all those dull tones.

Prom 2011: Springfield High

I have to admit, I was extremely disappointed by the turn out of last Saturday's free prom session. Out of the countless high schoolers that expressed interest and excitement in the shoot, only one girl showed up. Yes, you heard me right, one. I'm crossing my fingers tremendously for this Saturday's Thurston Prom. When you're going to look that unbelievable, and put that much effort into your hair, make-up and dress for weeks, and then hours the day of, poor quality images are just not good enough in my book (At least that's how I'd feel if I was all Princess-ed up).

So that's why I'm allowing and happily inviting any Springfield High students, or the surrounding high schools, to put on those dresses again (who doesn't want an excuse to put on a gorgeous dress for a second Saturday in a row!) and get a second chance at having a professional mini shoot. This time, however, I will be down at Thurston Park. It's from 4-6pm and I'm looking forward to seeing all the gorgeous girls, and handsome boys.

Luckily, Amanda is such a sweetie and so pretty from head to toe. I loved getting to shoot her in her prom dress. Here are just a few of the photos ...

Portrait: Kelly

I recently had come across a few really great locations in a small radius of one another. I wanted to test them out and see what great opportunities they held for photoshoots. So, who better to try them out with than one of the prettiest girls I've ever seen, Kelly.

Kelly is unbelievably stunning and sooo funny. I had a lot of fun spending time with her and goofing off. I'll never forget how freaked out she was of the potential bugs that were probably roaming around these abandoned cars! Kelly has recently moved to LA to chase her dreams of becoming an actress. I'm excited for her and what the future holds. Good luck Kelly and I hope you love your photos!

Maternity: Hayley

Hayley is my best friend from high school. We met at church camp and were inseparable within a week (It's funny what mutual "I Love Nerds" shirts will do for teenage friendship). She's crazy, funny and she'll be there for you for forever. Hayley is an amazing friend and I'm so proud to watch what an amazing mother she's become (Especially with baby number two on the way!). She's like my little sister and I will always love her to death.

Re-Worked Fridays

I have a May only treat for you guys! I call it "Re-Worked Fridays". Every Friday during May, I'm going to take an older photograph from my mini-vault of photos, and re-edit it the way I would do now. My editing style has progressed substantially this last year or two, so I'm excited to put a new twist on some old favorites.

For my first addition into Re-Worked Fridays I've chosen a photo from one of my favorite senior sessions. Jesika was not only the sweetest thing ever, but she was unbelievably gorgeous with KILLER blue eyes and wavy brown hair. She also had incredible fashion sense (I'm always a sucker for great comboy boots).

The first image is the image I originally chose and edited of this pose. The second image is my preferred choice now, as well as an edit job I whipped up this morning.

Enjoy!

Maternity: Taryn

I just adore Taryn. Pregnant or not, she is the cutest, sweetest thing. It was so much fun getting to tromp around with her in the sunshine (Oh how I've missed heat!). She was such a trooper, completely down for anything. She didn't hesitate at any of the crazy things that I asked her to do. I'm so excited for her son to be here and get to meet him. He has such a wonderful mommy and is going to be one of the luckiest boys. How could you not be lucky with a mom this awesome?!

Greenhill

I've been going to Greenhill for as long as I can remember. It was one of my favorite places growing up, and still is! For those of you who don't know, Greenhill is a local humane society that was started years upon years ago by a small group of concerned citizens. Now, it houses many adoptable animals including dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs. I recently started volunteering at Greenhill doing photography for them. Right now I've been working on photos of volunteers doing what they do best, working hard and hanging out with some of the sweetest animals! If you'd like to volunteer, here's a link to their volunteer page: http://www.green-hill.org/volunteer_opportunities.html. I will always enjoy my time at Greenhill, I hope my photos give justice to what a wonderful place it is for animals and humans alike.

Portraits: Emily & Robyn

There are few things in life that are cuter than little girls. Pig tails, barbies and little dresses ... oh my goodness! My heart just explodes with happiness (But then again, it's no secret that I live like an oversized little girl, with my collection of Disney movies and coloring books).

Emily and Robyn are two of the CUTEST little girls I know ( You'll just have to ignore the fact that they are two of some of my closest friends' daughters. I'm not bias ... ;) ) They are both so silly with such personalities. Emily is such a crack up and, as her mom says, "Total ham and cheese". She has the funniest quirks and expressions. Robyn reminds me soooo much of her mom it's hilarious. I've known her mom since I just entered into high school, and we've been best friends for years. It's so much fun seeing her have babies and blossoming into such an amazing mom. I was so blessed to get to spend the day with these 4 fun girls. Thank you Hayley, Aubrey, Robyn and Emily. I love all of you to the ends of the earth.

And the winner is ...

Elyse and Gator!!!

I want to thank everyone who entered. I thoroughly enjoyed reading all your funny, sweet and sentimental stories of times with you and your animals. It was a TOUGH choice, I had to drag my boyfriend onto my judgment panel with me because I couldn't decide! So thank you for your entries, and keep an open ear for more contests to come!
